Take Action: Support Hamline University and its Muslim Students
An art instructor at Hamline University in class displayed a painting of Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him (PBUH). A Muslim student who witnessed the display of art reported it to the school officials. Hamline University called the incident intolerant and Islamophobic. Additionally, the instructor’s contract was not renewed. However, she was allowed to complete her course. The Muslim student was offered an alternative class.
Hamline University has chosen to prioritize the safety and inclusiveness of its students and community. This decision is part of ongoing efforts to challenge the legacy of institutional racism on college campuses. Hamline University’s decision demonstrates its deep commitment to being a good steward for both its campus and its larger community.
Now, the school is getting pushback from professors across the country who aim to continue the hurt against Muslim students.
Rising white supremacy and xenophobia, as well as anti-Semitism, anti-blackness, and Islamophobia, continue to threaten the human rights of minorities in our nation. Islamophobia is a serious and ongoing threat in the United States – and especially in Minnesota. From harassment and attacks on Muslims to the recent vandalism of many mosques across the state – Islamophobia manifests in many ways.
Take Action Now: Stand up against this organized effort and support Muslim students and Hamline University as they take a stand affirming diversity. Take action now and let President Miller and the leadership of Hamline University know that our community stands with them against hate and Islamophobia
Displaying images of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is not okay, especially in all settings including academia.
Muslim scholars across the world are united in the belief that displaying images of the Prophet (PBUH) attacks the core beliefs of Muslims. Muslims are commanded not to depict the Prophet (PBUH) – it is contrary to Islamic teachings. Additionally, hate movements throughout history have used such displays as a way to desecrate the faith of Muslims, exclude Muslims, and incite violence. Taken together, displaying the image of the Prophet (PBUH) is intended to communicate hate.
